The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma has approved the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for workers in Imo State.
This was according to a statement issued by the State’s Ministry of Information and Strategy on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
The statement disclosed that the decision for the new wage for workers in the state was reached on Monday after members of the committee comprising the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Imo State Chapter, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Union Negotiating Council, and government representatives had turned in their report to the Governor following their recent two days marathon meeting.

Before the signing of the agreement, the governor addressed the various parties present that “all the unions operating in the State had agreed on the minimum wage and in addition, that those on consolidated salaries who are already on N70,000 minimum wage will get an additional 10 per cent on top of their salaries.”
The governor has also approved the implementation of the financial implications arising from the recent promotions of Imo State employees, the increase in pension allowances for retirees following the completion of the ongoing pension audit, and the enrollment of Imo State pensioners in the State’s Free Health Care Insurance Scheme.
Additionally, he highlighted that 4,529 retirees are awaiting outstanding gratuity at the Local Government level, while the State level has 6,427 retirees in a similar situation.
Furthermore, the governor assured that effective Tuesday, November 26, his administration will recommence gratuity payments for 2,962 retirees at the Local Government level and 2,742 at the State level, with the remaining balances of 1,567 (Local Government Area retirees) and 2,685 (State retirees) to be disbursed in one or two subsequent batches.

Recall the approval is in line with the federal government’s directive for a pay raise for workers nationwide, in July.
